WEED – Melting glaciers and rain caused Whitney Creek to overflow today, briefly covering Highway 97, about 10 miles north of Weed, said Mike Odle, spokesman for Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
The unusually hot weather has caused Mt. Shasta’s glaciers to melt and caused more debris to plug the creek, Steve Bachmann, a Shasta-Trinity National Forest hydrologist said.
The California Department of Transportation worked this morning to reduce pressure on the creek, and USFS crews and a bulldozer were working upstream to remove sediment, correct the creek’s flow path and reduce flooding, Odle said.
The Forest Service is advising the public to be cautious of high temperatures and rain if traveling along Highway 97 near Whitney Creek this weekend. Visit www.fs.fed.us/r5/shastatrinity for the latest information.
