Hello, I am possibly going to be relocating to Redding next year in the Spring. My wife and I are small-town people who grew up in North Carolina. I am in the Navy and will be a recruiter and Redding is one of the towns open to me. We are just looking to talk to some people to see how they like it. We love the outdoors and a "small-town friendly" environment. Growing up in the south, we are somewhat "afraid" of California in that the mentality and beliefs out there are WAY different then what we are used to. I think most of that is in southern Cali though. If anyone could share their thoughts on the area, that would be great. Look forward to hearing from some of you.

Ah, a Cackalacky couple!
You'll find it quite different than Southern California. Many people refer to anything north of LA as "Northern California" but really, I don't even consider San Francisco bay area to be "Northern California". I grew up over in Humboldt county, about 2.5 hours west of Redding. Really, there are three Californias.
Here is one such idea:

Redding is so unlike the rest of California that you would never realize it is in California. If it weren't for the low wages, very small job market, low techness, we would be the ideal place to live in the U.S. Redding is very Pro-American, support our troops, gung ho he man as it gets! Sun shines here almost year round, very very hot in the summer, fairly mild in the Winter, yet snow covered mountains surround us. Where else can you jump into a lake that averages 75 degrees, but still can view snow covered mts.? Temps in the 100's through summer months and rarely snows in Redding. Outdoors abound here, you can fish for trout or salmon in downtown Redding and actually eat them! Crystal clear lakes and rivers are everywhere. Clean air, no traffic, go fishing on your lunch break. Small town mentality, good ole boys that do not like change. Fairly friendly folks, however more than should, keep to themselves.
Indian casino's everywhere, about the only real nightlife, short on entertainment but if your into outdoors, Redding is the place! I guess you could say Redding is a true Western town, Rodeo is big here. No agriculture, so no immigrant issues. Tallest building in town is the jail, so that may say something. People from the big cities move here to get away from, well, the big city.
Pretty much a red city, mostly Republican, jeans truck driving types. American flags everywhere, support our troops stickers on almost every bumper. Bar talk consist of mainly, "how many deer to did ya get" did you see Foxworthy on TV last night, bottom line is Redding is a hick town, love it or leave it. I've left a couple of times, but always come back. Mostly due to not speaking a foreign language that you find down in South American, what we call anyplace south of Cottonwood. Welcome sign is not put out for liberals, Ahhh, that should get some hate mail, hahaha! Hey it's the truth, come on now.
Biggest industries cater to retirement, lots of jobs in the medical field. I would take a guess and say the number one sport here is Nascar. Hmmm, sounds like North Carolina eh? Redding is not and does not wish to be associated with the rest of California, for the most part you do not even realize we are in Cali, unless you watch the news, which I am finding, most people do not.

very well said, but you forgot to mention the really bad drivers, the fact that we have only 2 seasons here, not 4 like the rest of the states, and of course 1 homeless person per parking lot, and one registered sex offender per square mile. i think that sums it up pretty well.
