Starting a link directory?

I'd like to start a link directory. I saw one the other day that only cost $25 to set up. After a few months of hard work, the guy is selling it. Last bid was $2750. It has a PR5 rating and generates $400 a month revenue. It's actually been around for a year and a half, but this guy bought it as a "fixer-upper" and really turned it into something.

I spent a whole day, throwing myself against one brick wall after another, and can't figure out how to get one goiing, since I can't afford to bid on his. After posting on another forum, somebody mentioned "link farms" and really got me worried. If I decide to buy one, how can I tell the difference between a potentially great directory and a lousy link farm? Help!?

Re: Starting a link directory?

I definitely wouldn't buy a link directory now. I think the general trend is that google is devaluing directories faster than anything right now.

I think the truly good directories are niche specific or locally based.
If you do build one, focus on specific niches or regions, and try to intermingle more editorial content with the links.

Here is a good PHP directory script: http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/

If a site makes good money every month and requires very little work to maintain, then why are they selling it? Isn't passive income the most awesome thing in the world?

That's the first question I ask myself. I was thinking of selling redding-california.com at one point, wanted a little more cash for a down payment. It never sold and now it's pretty dead in google. Does okay in msn and yahoo, but nothing like it used to.

Re: Starting a link directory?

Thanks for the input. I just read about Google clamping down on link sales on another forum--that was after I posted, here. That was a really close call for me. I was actually thinking of placing a bid on that directory site.

My real motivation was to find something nice to do for a bunch of generous online businesses who have supported one of my other projects. I thought if I had a classy directory site where I could give them all featured listings as a thank you for their support, it would be a nice gesture. I guess I'll have to think of something else. I may go back to a previous idea of making a Squidoo lens for each of them. BTW, I started a Squidoo group for Redding in case you want to join it. It's a very select group right now--just me, myself, and I.
